Suite Homenajes was initially inspired by an obsession with J.S. Bach’s Toccata for harpsichord, BWV 923. There is a powerful chord progression towards the end that is quite chromatic and seems to never end. As I began reading through it on the guitar, it was obvious that this would never have as big of an impression as it does on the harpsichord. As this project began, I got the idea to try to set an excerpt of the Bach in an unconventional texture that I believe brings out the effect surprisingly well. I began to then collect some other ideas from some of my favorite composers to write this piece. Some excerpts will be direct quotes from pieces while others are pastiches of the composer’s musical aesthetics.
Suite Homenajes was awarded the Volterra Project Composers Award in 2020.

Suite Homenajes a été initialement inspirée par une fascination pour la Toccata pour clavecin de J. S. Bach, BWV 923. Vers la fin de l’œuvre, on trouve une progression d’accords très puissante, fortement chromatique, qui semble ne jamais vouloir s’achever. Lorsque j’ai commencé à la déchiffrer à la guitare, il est rapidement apparu qu’elle ne produirait jamais un impact comparable à celui qu’elle a au clavecin. Au début de ce projet, j’ai donc eu l’idée de tenter de placer un extrait de Bach dans une texture non conventionnelle, qui, selon moi, met étonnamment bien en valeur cet effet. J’ai ensuite rassemblé d’autres idées issues de certains de mes compositeurs préférés pour écrire cette pièce. Certains passages sont des citations directes d’œuvres existantes, tandis que d’autres prennent la forme de pastiches de l’esthétique musicale de ces compositeurs.

Suite Homenajes a reçu le Volterra Project Composers Award en 2020.
