Leon Coates's Suite for Flute and Organ is an excellent and welcome addition to the repertoire for this instrument combination.The work was completed in July 1982, in response to a commission from Philip Sawyer for a performance during the Edinburgh Organ Week in August of that year. The commission was supported by funds provided by the Scottish Arts Council.The première was given by Sheila Cochrane (flute) and Philip Sawyer (organ) in St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh. Subsequent performances were given by the same musicians in St Stephen’s Church, Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, as well as in Nairn and Glasgow. The work has also been performed in Sydney, Australia, with the most recent performances having been given by Louisa Gard and Philip Sawyer.The Suite for Flute and Organ was first published by Europa Edition, Edinburgh, Scotland in 2009. The present performing edition includes a separate flute part for the soloist. The duration of the work is approximately 17 minutes.
