Succeeding with the Masters, Romantic Era, Volume One, is a collection of graded repertoire featuring selections from Tchaikovsky, Schumann, and Schubert-three great masters of the Romantic era. These works build a foundation for playing the more advanced repertoire of the Romantic era. Each piece is introduced by a short "discovery" of a particular characteristic of the Romantic era. Practice strategies guide the student in preparing and performing each piece. This comprehensive approach to learning style, technique, and historical context provides a valuable foundation for successful performance of all romantic repertoire pieces.

About Succeeding with the Masters

Succeeding with the Masters is a series dedicated to the authentic keyboard works of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Twentieth-Century masters.
This series provides a complete and easily accessible method for learning and performing the works of the masters. Each book presents the works in historical perspective for the student, and provides the means and the motivation to play these pieces in the correct stylistic, musical, and technical manner. The easily understandable format of practice strategies and musical concepts make this series enjoyable for both students and teachers.

Succeeding with the Masters begins with late-elementary repertoire, continues through intermediate-level works and also includes a few early-advanced works. Upon completion of the series, students will be well prepared for the major keyboard works by the master composers of each era.

Very helpful volume
I received this product a few weeks ago and I've been through most of the pieces. They are well-chosen and the explanations are helpful. I'll soon get to volume 2. I wish there was a volume 3!

Excellent pedagogical content
The Succeeding With the Masters series are highly pedagogical and excellent value for money. I have all books in the series, but the Romantic one is favorite (personal preference as I like Schumann & Tchaikovsky). What separates this from the others is the depth of information and instruction. Aside from the composer biography there are 1-2 pages dedicated for EACH piece discussing its background complete with practice strategies (with accompanying figures and photos/pictures). As if that weren't enough, the accompanying CD also contains the practice strategies as demonstrated by Helen Marlais. In my opinion, the practice strategies alone are worth the money. Because of the number of pieces (22) and the included practice strategies, this book is thicker than than my other sheet music books. The printing is also excellent-very clear, large print, thick white paper and no bleeding. A far cry from my flimsy yellow Schirmer editions. It's a criminally under-rated series!
