SKU: A0.941204

Composed by Various. Arranged by David M. Sampson. Folk,Patriotic,Traditional. Score and parts. 122 pages. David M. Sampson #6038943. Published by David M. Sampson (A0.941204).

This is my concert band arrangement of eight popular songs from the Great War, some cheerful, some sentimental, some funny, some downright patriotic.

They include "Over There", "Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag", "How Ya Gonna Keep 'Em Down on the Farm", "Til We Meet Again", "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now", "Oh! What a Lovely War", "Keep the Home-fires Burning", "It's a Long Way to Tipperary".

This piece enjoyed a certain vogue during the Centennial Celebration (2014-2018), but the songs are still worth listening to. I hope you enjoy them.

Runtime: 13 minutes.

Here are the lyrics to the songs:

OVER THERE
----------
Over there, over there,
Send the word, send the word over there
That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming
The drums rum-tumming everywhere.
So prepare, say a prayer,
Send the word, send the word to beware -
We'll be over, we're coming over,
And we won't come back till it's over, over there.

PACK UP YOUR TROUBLES IN YOUR OLD KIT BAG
-----------------------------------------
Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag
And smile, smile, smile.
Don't let your joy and laughter hear the snag,
Smile boys, that's the style
What's the use of worrying
It never was worth while
So, pack up your troubles in your old kit bag
And smile, smile, smile.

HOW YA GONNA KEEP 'EM DOWN ON THE FARM
--------------------------------------
How ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm
After they've seen Paree'?
How ya gonna keep 'em away from Broadway,
Jazzin around and paintin' the town?
How ya gonna keep 'em away from harm? That's a mystery.
They'll never want to see a rake or plow.
And who the deuce can parleyvous a cow?
How ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm
After they've seen Paree'?

TIL WE MEET AGAIN
-----------------
Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu,
When the clouds roll by I'll come to you,
Then the skies will seem more blue,
Down in lovers lane, my dearie.
Wedding bells will ring so merrily,
Every tear will be a memory,
So wait and pray each night for me,
Till we meet again.

I WONDER WHO'S KISSING HER NOW
------------------------------
I wonder who's kissing her now,
Wonder who's teaching her how?
Wonder who's looking in to her eyes?
Breathing sighs!
Telling lies!
I wonder if she's got a boy,
The girl who once filled me with joy?
I wonder if she ever tells him of me?
I wonder who's kissing her now?

Oh! It's a Lovely War
---------------------
Up to your waist in water, Up to your eyes in slush,
Using the kind of language That makes the sergeant blush,
Who wouldn't join the army? That's what we all inquire!
Don't we pity the poor civilians, Sitting beside the fire!

When does a soldier grumble? When does he make a fuss?
No one is more contented in all the world than us.
Oh it's a cushy life, boys, really we love it so:
Once a fellow was sent on leave and simply refused to go.

CHORUS
Oh, oh, oh it's a lovely war.
Who wouldn't be a soldier, eh?
Oh it's a shame to take the pay.
As soon as reveille has gone
We feel just as heavy as lead,
But we never get up till the sergeant brings
Our breakfast up to bed.
O.
