Short Piece For Large Orchestra by Julia Perry Concert Band - Digital Sheet Music

By Julia Perry

A fantastic work for more advanced bands, 'Short Piece' was originally composed by Julie Perry for chamber orchestra in 1952 and then expanded for full forces. The African-American composer and conductor was born in Kentucky, studying at Westminster Choir College and then Juilliard; she also worked with Nadia Boulanger, winning the Boulanger Grand Prix for her Viola Sonata. Her work includes a dozen symphonies and a pair of piano concertos; also three operas and a ballet. In the words of John Henken, this piece is 'an initially raucous, highly energised essay...There are edgy lyrical contrasts, and the work closes in a haunted Lento, before a whiplash ending returns the aggressive opening thunder.' Arranged to champion the music of women composers for band as part of a pledge throughout 2023 #ArrangeMeGoals2023
