Fuchs, the German composer and conductor, was born in December, 1752 in Mainz, Germany and died in October, 1821 in Paris. He studied composition with J. C. Cannabich (1731-1798) and also with Haydn. In Zweibrucken he became conductor of an army band and worked as an instrumental teacher. In 1784 he moved to Paris, became active as a musician and composer and when, in 1795, the Conservatoire was established, he became professor of clarinet there.
