See now, what kind of love this is Cantata for the 3rd day of Christmas by Johann Sebastian Bach 4-Part - Sheet Music

By Johann Sebastian Bach

The cantata Sehet, welch eine Liebe (See what love), BWV 64, composed for the 3rd day of Christmas in 1723, opens with a chorus in the "old style", namely without obbligato instruments. As in the cantata Darzu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes (For this the Son of God has appeared), BWV 40, performed the day before, this work features no fewer than three chorale movements, two of which frame the first recitative "Geh Welt! behalte nur das Deine". Since the two chorales do not appear in Oswald Knauer’s original text from 1720, it can be assumed that Bach deliberately wished to mirror the previous day’s cantata with its internal chorales. Here, however, the festive horns of BWV 40 are replaced by an antiquated ensemble of cornett (zink) and trombones, which, along with the wind accompaniment to the chorales and the stile antico of the opening movement, make for an unusual and diverting soundscape.
