The second movement represents one of the most beautiful pages ever written in music. The soft melody, accompanied by harmonies that could only have come from Beethoven's pen, create an atmosphere of tranquility and impressive calm. For beginning students it is a great piece to develop the notion of the cantabile, and can be performed in academic recitals or concerts.
Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, op. 13, generally known as, the Pathetic Sonata, was published in 1799, although it was written the year before. Beethoven dedicated this work to his friend, Prince Karl Lichnowsky. With this sonata, Beethoven opened the door to the future - no one after hearing this work - could close their eyes to the possibilities of expression presented here.
