Sailor's Hornpipe by Traditional Brass Quintet - Digital Sheet Music

By Traditional

This is a little ditty that was played aboard the sailing ships of His (or Her) Majesty's Navy by an onboard fiddler or piper. And to it the sailors would dance, in part for the exercise on a long voyage. Samuel Pepys called it "The Jig of the Ship." Presumably, a shipboard piper would play it at a comfortable, even slow, tempo, but it's typically performed at breakneck speed. Or you can start slow and accelerate to stupid. I put this arrangement together for our quintet to play at a U.S. Navy ship reunion. It's moderately brisk, right at the lunatic fringe of our capabilities. It's for two trumpets, horn, baritone TC (a trombone would be near impossible) and tuba, and no one escapes unscathed. Kinda fun, but it's a lot of work for a minute and a half of music. If you want other instrumentation, please contact me at wilcor@aol.com.
