Romantic Playford: Goddesses String Duet - Digital Sheet Music
Goddesses is an early English Country Dance tune that made its first appearance in the 1st edition of Playford's Dancing Master, which was published in 1651. The structure is AA'BB'; the repeats are written out. A popular tune, Goddesses also appeared in later editions of Playford's Dancing Master, with interesting variations. I've arranged this tune as a duo and have incorporated a restatement of both themes to include these variations, which I've noted as A2 and B2. I've also included minor divisions of my own. The melody is in the upper part throughout, with the lower part alternating between a contrapuntal and a drone style. Goddesses can be played on two violins or flute (recorder) and violin. In the audio sample provided here, we played the music twice: the first time on tenor recorder and muted violin, and the second time on soprano recorder (one octave higher than the tenor recorder) and unmuted violin. Goddesses makes a beautiful and unique wedding processional, especially for the bridesmaids. It could combine effectively with other music from the Romantic Playford series. Goddesses will be enjoyed by the student seeking an interesting ensemble piece for recital that is not out of reach for the young violinist.
