It was later recorded by Michael Jackson in 1972, and was the best-selling hit on his debut solo album “Got To Be There”.

This arrangement is written for a soprano cornet soloist, and is a rousing crowd-pleaser, designed to get the audience clapping along. It was written for, and first performed by, Charlie Welch of Horbury Victoria Band. Whether it is a Christmas piece is up to the concert planner to decide - but it definitely works in a festive programme!

The solo part is a guide, which the soloist is welcome to diverge from if desired! In particular, the section between H and K has a free “jazz solo” feel and can be simplified or embellished to suit the player.

A soprano duet version is included for use as an unconventional novelty feature. Whilst a Bb version of the 2nd duet part has also been included, this is not the recommended instrumentation, and it will be a challenge to play!

Alternate clef trombone parts are provided.

Audio file taken from a live performance by John Smith, Ebbw Valley Brass.
