THE ROCK (UTYOS), Op. 7 is a symphonic poem composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) in 1893 when he was just 20 years old, and it premiered in Moscow in 1894 under the baton of Vasily Safonov. Inspired by a poetic image from Lermontov and the short story Along the Way by Anton Chekhov, the piece evokes a dramatic encounter between a weary traveler and a stern cliff during a snowstorm, symbolizing the contrast between fleeting human emotion and eternal nature. Richly orchestrated, it foreshadows the lush Romanticism of his later works, while also paying homage to Tchaikovsky, who praised it.
