Remember by Chen Yi Chamber Music - Sheet Music

By Chen Yi

REMEMBER was composed as a memorial for Steven Stucky. Short falloffs at the ends of phrases imitate the sounds of sighing lamentation in Chinese folk songs. The music develops economically through many arresting textures, featuring each instrument in turn, and ends inconclusively, yet satisfyingly, as if its song has ended, but not its sorrow. For advanced performers.REMEMBER was composed for the new music ensemble, loadbang, in 2022 in memory of Steven Stucky (1949-2016). Stucky was the first Barr Institute Laureate Composer at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory, from 2006 through 2008. In that capacity, he influenced and supported many UMKC composers through lectures, masterclasses, new music workshops, and by offering sincere advice for the development of the Institute. He made profound contributions to the UMKC music community as an extraordinary composer, an excellent and devoted teacher, an enthusiastic advocate for new music composers, and as a generous human being. Professor Stucky will be deeply missed by all of us in the UMKC community.REMEMBER is scored for baritone voice, trumpet, trombone, and bass clarinet. The lyrics were drawn from nonsense syllables found in Chinese folk songs (“yo, yo, yo, yo, wei,” and so on), and the way the pitches drop down at the ends of some melodic phrases mimics the sound of sighing in this style. The initial melodic material is developed throughout the work in various textures, featuring each instument in turn.
