Jan Moretus (1543-1610) was a book printer and publisher in his native city of Antwerp. He worked as assistant to his father-in-law, the renowned master printer and publisher Christoffel Plantijn. After Plantijn’s death in 1589 Moretus took over the business.The composition Moretus consists of four parts that draw on the remarkable personality of Jan Moretus aswell as the printing business. In both the titles of the movements and the thematic structure we can see a certain symmetry: a playful allusion to the process of printing.Part 1, A Celebrated Gentleman, describes the illustrious figure of Moretus in a festive chorale. In the second part, ExpressiveImpressions, the printing press itself is brought to life in repeated motifs - despite the industrial, mechanical nature of the process, the product always has an artistic and cultural dimension. In the third part, Impressive Expression, the wind band is invited (or challenged), to intone the slow theme with a poignant expressiveness. Part 4, A Gentle Celebration, is a celebratory finale with a fresh theme.

De Antwerpenaar Jan Moretus (1543-1610) was drukker-uitgever in zijn geboortestad. Hij was de rechterhand van zijn schoonvader, de beroemde meester-drukker en uitgever Christoffel Plantijn. Na diens dood in 1589 nam Moretus de firmavan Plantijn over.De compositie Moretus bestaat uit vier delen, die de opmerkelijke persoonlijkheid van Jan Moretus alsmede het drukkersvak beschrijven. Zowel qua titel als qua thematische opbouw zijn de vier delen elkaarsspiegelbeeld: een speelse verwijzing naar de druktechniek.Deel 1, A Celebrated Gentleman, beschrijft de gevierde figuur Moretus in een feestelijk koraal. In deel 2, Expressive Impressions, horen we als het ware dedrukpersen zelf in herhaalde motieven - hoe mechanisch de industrie ook is, het product is steeds van artistieke of culturele waarde. In deel 3, Impressive Expression, wordt het orkest uitgenodigd (of uitgedaagd) het langzamethema met een indrukwekkende zeggingskracht te brengen. Deel 4, A Gentle Celebration, is een feestelijke finale met een fris thema.

Jan Moretus (1543-1610) war ein Buchdrucker und Herausgeber in seiner Geburtsstadt Antwerpen. Er war die rechte Hand seines Schwiegervaters, dem berühmten Meisterdruckers und Herausgebers Christoffel Plantijn. Nach dessen Tod im Jahre 1589 übernahm Moretus den Betrieb.Die Komposition Moretus besteht aus vier Teilen, welche die bemerkenswerte Persönlichkeit des Jan Moretus und auch das Druckerhandwerk beschreiben. Sowohl in den Satztiteln als auch im thematischen Aufbau offenbart sich eine spiegelbildliche Struktur: eine spielerische Andeutung auf die Drucktechnik.Teil 1, A Celebrated Gentleman, beschreibt die gefeierte Person Moretus in einem festlichenChoral. Im zweiten Teil, Expressive Impression, ist sozusagen die Druckpresse selbst in wiederholten Motiven zu hören - wie mechanisch diese Industrie auch sein mag, das Produkt ist doch immer von künstlerischem und kulturellem Wert. Im dritten Teil, Impressive Expression, wird das Blasorchester eingeladen (oder herausgefordert), das langsame Thema mit einer ergreifenden Ausdruckskraft zu intonieren. Teil 4, A Gentle Celebration, ist ein festliches Finale mit einem frischen Thema.

Jan Moretus (1543-1610) était imprimeur et éditeur de livres Anvers, sa ville natale. Il était l’assistant de son beau-père, le célèbre imprimeur et éditeur Christoffel Plantijn. Après la mort de celui-ci, en 1589, Moretus reprit la direction de l’entreprise.L’oeuvre composée par Bart Picqueur comprend quatre mouvements qui s’inspirent non seulement de la remarquable personnalité de Jan Moretus, mais également du monde de l’imprimerie. Nous remarquons une certaine symétrie dans les titres des mouvements comme dans leur structure thématique : une allusion spirituelle au processus d’imprimerie. La première partie, A Celebrated Gentleman, décrit le personnageillustre de Moretus dans un choral joyeux. Dans la deuxième, Expressive Impressions, la presse d’imprimerie elle-même se fait entendre dans des motifs répétés, et malgré la nature mécanique du processus, le résultat affiche, avec noblesse, une dimension culturelle et artistique. Dans la troisième partie, Impressive Expression, l’orchestre est invité imprégner le thème lent d’une expression poignante. La quatrième partie, A Gentle Celebration, offre un finale plein d’entrain fondé sur un thème nouveau.
