Composed by John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Brian Harris. Folk,Holiday,March,Patriotic,Standards. 62 pages. Bandroom.com Publications #21179. Published by Bandroom.com Publications (A0.859716).

The joyous and fun U.S. FIELD ARTILLERY MARCH by John Philip Sousa will be the favorite of your band and audience alike - especially at the break strain where the band members break into song with the tune everyone knows. Pure excitement! For an even greater effect, have the brass section stand for the final repeat of the famous melody.

This lightly-edited arrangement of Sousa's work remains true to the original in key and rhythms, but has modified, easier ranges for most players. The bass line is now doubled throughout the low woodwinds, and the saxophone parts are reorganized (the original published parts were inconsistently voiced). Instead of three clarinet and trumpet parts, it now has two with the second part having optional divisi notes. Also, the repeat of the first strain was removed and an optional cannon shot at the end was added.

PROGRAMMING: about 2 minutes, 20 seconds in length; ideal for use at Contest as a short march will save your players’ chops for other selections

FEATURES: although still in original key and rhythms, the ranges have been moderated from Sousa's original version. Band members sing the famous OVER HILL, OVER DALE song as the marimba plays the melody (to assist with the singing. The trombones and euphonium replace the 4-part horn backbeats during singing.

CHALLENGES: singing (unless you have your band sing on a regular basis, students might be reluctant at first - but by performance time, they'll belt it out); key signature/key change (Ab major to Db major); use of double flats and C-flats (just a few!) in some parts during the Break Strain.

RANGES: Flute to 4th line G (above staff); 1st Clarinet to 2nd line C (above staff); 2nd Clarinet to Eb on staff (4th space); 1st Trumpet to Bb above staff; 2nd Trumpet to F (top of staff; divisi in spots); 1st Trombone to Gb above staff; B.C. Euphonium to G above staff.

INSTRUMENTATION: includes Full Conductor Score (15 pages) and Parts (48 pages) for each instrument: Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet 1, Clarinet 2, Bass Clarinet, Alto Sax 1, Alto Sax 2, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Trumpet 1, Trumpet 2, Horn (in F) 1 & 2, Horn (in F) 3 & 4, Trombone 1, Trombone 2, Trombone 3, B.C. Euphonium, T.C. Euphonium, Tuba, Marimba, Snare & Bass Drum, Crash Cymbals & Cannon.

NOTE: included is a SITE LICENSE granting permission to print or photocopy as needed for use by your school - even for contest judge's scores.

ARRANGER: Now retired, Brian Harris holds the Ph.D. in Music Education from the Florida State University and was a band director for over 30 years at public school and college levels. BcP-AB
