Impromptu for saxophones is exactly what thetitle suggests: an improvisatory work for two saxophones with a somewhatlast-minute inception.

Looking to fill space on a program, my two friends andcolleagues Matthew Floeter and Abraham Nunez asked me if I’d like to compose awork for their duo to premiere at the 2020 North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA)conference. The only catch was that they needed a title that same day to submit with theirapplication, thus the Impromptu was born.

The piece is divided into four movements thateach take on a distinct character described by the tempo markings at thebeginning of each section. They are all dedicated to the ways Matt and Abrahamwork with one another, and their interpretations of music and subsequent rehearsalhabits. I have chosen not to title the individual movements to leave someinterpretation to the performers’ discretion, and to allow performers to have amore personal interpretation of the music.

This work is dedicated to my good friendsMatthew Floeter and Abraham Nunez, and premiered by their Collider Duo on March7th, 2020 at the 2020 Biennial NASA conference.
