This new composition from composer David Hinds evokes the spirit of the Old West, when early pioneers traveled across the great prairies of the American West. This is a driving new piece that has accented themes with a lyrical contrasting middle section. Prairie Spirit is excellent for contests or festival performances, and it is sure to be a piece your students will want to play over and over again.
Prairie Spirit is a piece that has a mysterious quality. Written in E minor, it is likewise an energetic piece in that requires the performance to be played in one beat per measure. The quarter notes should be short (as marked) before and after two eighth notes, as in mm, 1, 2, 5 and 6. Additionally, the accents must be observed especially when they occur on beats 1, 3, 2 and 1 as in mm. 19–22. This pattern suggests a feel without needing to change the time signature. By contrast, the quarter notes should be lengthened in the espressivo section beginning at m. 23. This section also gives the cellos and basses a chance to enjoy the melody. This should be a fun piece for your students to play and certainly could be considered for contest or festival performances.
