De Amerikaanse opera Porgy and Bess werd in 1935 gecomponeerd door George Gershwin, op een libretto van zijn broer Ira Gershwin en DuBose Heyward, naar Heywards roman Porgy - een verhaal over de liefde tussen de kreupelenegerbedelaar Porgy en het meisje Bess in de stad Charleston in South Carolina. Diverse stukken uit de opera worden nog altijd regelmatig uitgevoerd in talloze bewerkingen. In dit arrangement voor harmonieorkest heeft StefanSchwalgin op vakkundige wijze de volgende songs verwerkt: Summertime, I Got Plenty o’Nuttin’, It Ain’t Necessarily So en Bess, You Is My Woman Now.
George Gershwin bestimmte, dass seine amerikanische Oper“ nur mit schwarzen Künstlern besetzt werden sollte. Durch diese Vorgabe erschwert, wurde Porgy and Bess nur selten aufgeführt und erst nach Gershwins Tod richtig berühmt, nicht zuletzt durch die Verfilmung von 1959. Heute sind die Lieder, die Stefan Schwalgin in seinem Medley verarbeitete, weltweit bekannte Jazz-Standards.
Considéré aujourd’hui comme un grand classique de la culture américaine, l’opéra Porgy and Bess (1935) fut longtemps controversé et ne connut le succès qu’après la mort de Gershwin (1898-1937). Cet excellent arrangement de Stefan Schwalgin rassemble quatre chansons emblématiques de l’opéra : Summertime, I Got Plenty o' Nuttin’, It Ain’t Necessarily So et Bess, You Is My Woman Now.
