Joseph Hauers (1883-1959) Leben verlief ziemlich undramatisch in geregelten Bahnen, aber im musikalischen Bereich war er revolutionär. Er bewies die grundsätzliche Gleichberechtigung aller Töne im temperierten System und erfand das „Zwölftonspiel. 1923 ließ sich Hauer von Friedrich Hölderlins Werk zu den o.g. Klavierstücken inspirieren. Er verwendete dafür eine oder zwei Zeilen aus verschiedenen Gedichten und Fragmenten und verband sie mit seiner strukturierten, doch immer melodisch geführten Zwölftonmusik.
