Some excellent, some insensitive performances
Pianist Diane Hidy plays book 2 sufficiently for this level of student. She has some beautiful phrasing and interpretation, though she uses light pedal in Classical pieces much more than I would. She plays the lyrical, contemporary pieces in book 1 with beautiful phrasing and expression. In contrast, she plays the Baroque pieces in book 1 insensitively, with an almost-pounding sound and very little phrasing; her separated notes are somewhat inconsistent between her two hands. Compared to this CD, Suzuki Piano CD is much more expressive in all styles of music; however, since this CD goes with the series (and my students don't notice quite all of these details), I will use it with some of my students. I like to have my students practice with the CD, and unfortunately I will have to tell them to do something other than the CD for several spots per song. Tempi: Some pieces are a bit fast for a practice tempo, but fine for performance.
