Pavanas & Canarios (Gaspar Sanz 1674) for 2 Cellos by Gaspar Sanz String Duet - Digital Sheet Music

By Gaspar Sanz

Pavanas & Canarios by Gaspar Sanz

Pavanas & Canarios by Gaspar Sanz. Originally written for the Baroque Spanish guitar by the Spanish composer Gaspar Sanz. The impact of rhythm and melody don't show too much on a soft guitar. But on 2 cellos they have an impact that the audience is still and stops breathing! The first dance is Pavanas, the "peacock dance" in which the gentleman wore a helmet with a peacock feather to solemnly march in with his wife on the arm. Somehow stark, it creates an even stronger impression. The second dance is the contrasting bouncing Canarios, a Gigue from the canary islands influenced by the more complex African rhythms, in particular a change between 6/8 and 3/4. The 2 cellos rival playing bouncing double stops sounding like a whole orchestra. Here a performance of Pavanas: https://youtu.be/FwEKG2G1lbYand Canarios: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scVnkI5bXZ0
