Valuable for Understanding Jazz Melodists (Not for Accompaniment)
As a collaborative pianist, this "Signature Licks" book is clearly tailored for saxophonists to master Paul Desmond's unique style. It provides deep insight into his melodic lines and techniques, which can indirectly inform jazz phrasing for vocalists. However, it's strictly a saxophone instruction book and does not include piano accompaniment or vocal parts, which is not its purpose. Excellent for sax players, just not a direct resource for vocal coaching.

Finally Sounding Like Paul Desmond!
What a joy to dive into Paul Desmond's music with this book! The "step-by-step breakdown" and included online audio with "PLAYBACK+" features (slowing down is a godsend!) make learning these "right from the record licks" incredibly enjoyable and achievable. Tackling classics like "Take Five" feels less daunting. It’s perfect for a weekend player like me who wants to understand and play my favorite jazz legend's style.
