Programme Note - Palace Dances 1. Intrada2. Palace Pavane3. Alley Dance4. Princess Alexandra's Minuet5. Palais de Danse Palace Dances was commissioned by the Palace Band, a large ensemble of woodwind players who rehearse near Alexandra Palace (‘Alley Pally’) in North London. The five movements loosely refer to the Palace: the first movement sets the scene, and the second movement suggests a leisurely train journey to the Palace, crossing the disused Muswell Hill Viaduct (now a footpath), with its broad view over London. The third movement is a more contemporary dance, but the gracious and stately fourth movement takes us back to the origins of the Palace, which was named after Princess Alexandra of Denmark, the wife of King Edward VII. Finally, we can imagine a young couple dancing in the grand ballroom in the Palace's heyday, having arrived on a ‘bicycle made for two'.
