Outrenoir by Edith Canat de Chizy Viola Solo - Sheet Music

By Edith Canat de Chizy

In creating this piece, I wanted to continue my relationship with painting, which I had already explored in several of my previous works: Les Rayons du jour, a concerto for viola and orchestra based on the life of Nicolas de Staël, Vagues se brisant contre le vent (Waves Breaking Against the Wind), for flute and ensemble, based on a painting by William Turner as well as Pluie, vapeur, vitesse (Rain, Steam, Speed), another painting by Turner, and two other pieces based on Whistler's Nocturnes series (En bleu et or (In Blue and Gold), for viola and piano, and En noir et or (In Black and Gold), for string quartet). For me, the correspondence between pictorial material and sound material is an inexhaustible source of research into timbre. Outrenoir naturally evokes the painter Pierre Soulages and his quest for light. This black which, for him, ?ceases to be black and becomes a source of clarity, of secret light?. Here I have attempted to retrace his journey, from the ?authority of black? to its transfiguration: five sequences mark the stages: 1 Black, 2 Reflections, 3 Rhythms, 4 Light/Space, 5 White. The viola is the guiding thread of this trajectory, around which the writing of the whole is organised.
