Fullbodied walkthrough of instruments
A fullbodied and initiated walkthrough of symphonic instruments and their history, range, tone etc, told by an enthusiastic author with much (British)humor, animal metaphores and indepth knowledge. The score examples are plenty and well choosen. On the subject on how to deploy these instrument in the orchestra there are some information but not enough as to match the ambitious title of the book. (this is common to most books on orchestration) First edition is 1914, yet all information appears up to date and modern as what can be expected by 1914. As the book predates Stravinsky, Schnberg and others, the usefulness is somewhat in question. Anyway this book is clearly better than that of Casella.
