ODEON (Ernesto Nazareth) - 3 GUITARS or LARGE ENSEMBLE

ODEON (Ernesto Nazareth) - 3 GUITARS or LARGE ENSEMBLEDerek Hasted writes "Odeon, a wonderful piece (which reminds me of Villa-Lobos Choros No 1) was composed in 1909, and refers to the Odeon Cinema in Rio de Janeiro, where Nazareth often played the piano in the cinema's waiting area.My arrangement for 3 guitars/large ensemble has had two "adjustments" to the public domain piano score so it fits the guitar really well. The first was to move the key from C#m to Em, where it sits comfortably on the guitar with access to nice deep bass notes and only the briefest excursion above fret 12.The second was to make the ornaments more guitar-friendly, as explained in the edition's Foreword, and you may decide they are optional anyway. This piece, marked as a Brazilian Tango, is generally accepted as a choro, and like the classical Minuet, has a Trio section and then a reprise. In fact there is a total of 9 sections, and each player (each section in a large ensemble) has the tune three times. We can't be fairer than that. The original has no metronome mark, but I've chosen a tempo slightly slower than most piano versions - the sweet sound of the guitar needs to breathe. A relaxed tempo makes it very accessible to intermediate guitarists. If your music stand can accommodate 3 sheets of paper stuck together with sticky tape, there are no page turns.

ODEON (Ernesto Nazareth) - 3 GUITARS or LARGE ENSEMBLE

Derek Hasted writes "Odeon, a wonderful piece (which reminds me of Villa-Lobos Choros No 1) was composed in 1909, and refers to the Odeon Cinema in Rio de Janeiro, where Nazareth often played the piano in the cinema's waiting area.

My arrangement for 3 guitars/large ensemble has had two "adjustments" to the public domain piano score so it fits the guitar really well.

The first was to move the key from C#m to Em, where it sits comfortably on the guitar with access to nice deep bass notes and only the briefest excursion above fret 12.

The second was to make the ornaments more guitar-friendly, as explained in the edition's Foreword, and you may decide they are optional anyway.

I also have a version for 4 guitars which has an easy 4th part in treble and bass clefs, ideal for a novice player.

I hope you and your audiences will enjoy this piece!"
