From 1717-1720, Handel lived outside London at Cannons where he was resident composer to the Earl of Carnarvon, who in 1719 became the 1st Duke of Chandos. It was for him that Handel composed elevel Chandos Anthems, this one beging number 8, based on the opening phrase from the hymntune, St. Anne.
