A new setting of the great hymn text by John Mason Neale and Henry Sloan Coffin offers the familiarity of well-know poetry, a familiar translation, and a memorable new melody within the modal feel traditionally associated with it.
Voicings ranging from unison all the way to four-part lead to a dramatic middle section intensifying the appeal of the original refrain. Then, an optional descant solo (or a few voices) provides the climactic “Shall come to thee, O Israel,” once more identifying the coming Messiah as Emmanuel, God with us.
The supportive, occasionally syncopated accompaniment is both consistent and about as simple as possible with very little in the left hand beyond beat three of any measure, especially when the right hand is active.
The cello part could be played by bassoon as well.
