In William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Lord Polonius’ snooping is thwarted by the quick-witted Hamlet, feigning madness in order to distract his potential enemies. The sarcastic wit of the line “words, words, words,” is the inspiration for this short piece for solo bass flute. The reimagined quote is now, “What do you play?” to which the musician sarcastically answers, “Notes, notes, notes.” The bass flute begins the piece with a rhythmical meandering melody in 5/4 time, perhaps to throw off the listener’s sense of balance as an answer to their inane questioning.
