Copland-esque sounds abound in this energetic original where everyone fiddles! This wild combination of fiddling and contemporary harmony offers your players engaging lines to play as well as technical challenges. This should be played with an "edge-of-your-seat" aggressiveness and precision. Program this fiery fiddling as your closer or even as an encore.
Mountain Chasexa0is a rollicking piece that features a wild combination of fiddling and contemporary harmony. Its active "mountain" style offers young players engaging lines to play as well as technical challenges. The piece is to be played with an edge-of-your-seat aggressiveness and precision. Practice at a slow tempo would be especially beneficial for this piece. The violins carry most of the main melodies, with the repeated-note pulses and countermelodies in viola, cello and bass providing the piece's driving force. These elements come to the foreground at times (viola m. 11, cello m. 29, violin II mm. 45 and 68) but their main purpose is to establish rhythmic continuity. The melodic figures are split between sections just often enough (i.e. m. 8, m. 16, m. 20) to demand careful listening within the ensemble and to challenge players to maintain the flow and character of the melody.Special attention should be paid to the crescendos, diminuendos, and quiet dynamic sections (m. 11-12, m. 29-30, m. 45-52, m. 68-71), as they are essential in giving the listener and player repose between the more vigorous fiddling sections. After the sudden piano marking at m.84, the build to the end is an exciting chase requiring the group to be at its most intense and precise. The accented double-stops in m. 96 are played powerfully, bringing the piece to an exciting close.
