Its swaggering opening and closing sections are beautifully offset by a middle section of ethereal lightness, emphasizing the tragic conflict of the two families concerned, as well as the gulf between belligerent stubbornness and the vulnerable tenderness of young love. These contrasts are also very effective in this arrangement for two pianos by Richard Simm.
