Song no 3 from Leon Gray's powerful new solo cantata, 'Marionette' about love, betrayal, pain, anger, growth and restitution. The protagonist in 'Monday' wonders why their relationship had to end on a Monday of all days, with a whole week of work to continue to face. The deep, profound sadness of loss is expressed with the constant re-emergence of the question "Why'd it have to be a Monday?", growing ever more impassioned as the piece progresses.
Written in a touching, theatrical style, this movement has been written to allow the performer to demonstrate questioning reflection, mixed with a gentle, then more visible sadness. Set to a bittersweet melodic and harmonic background, this piece is the epitome of sadness if done well. Singable, appealing, tonal with both contemporary pop and contemporary classical edges; a moving, expressive and reflective piece written to express the quiet moments when we wonder why things turned out the way they did.
