Mexican Hat Dance (Jarabe Tapatio) by Folk Song String Trio - Digital Sheet Music

By Folk Song

The "Mexican Hat Dance" (Jarabe Tapatio) is the national dance of Mexico. It originated as a courtship dance in Guadalajara, Jalisco, but its elements can be traced back to the Spanish zambra. In this traditional dance, male dancers take the role of charros as they flirtatiously dance around the brim of their partner's hat on the floor. The choreography includes hopping and sliding around the sombrero, as well as more intricate footwork as the dancer's skill allows. The music has several tempo changes as well as time signature changes, reflecting the many colors of the culture. This dance is a symbol not only of the Mexican culture, but their national pride.
