These are some of the more lighthearted songs: "Sit Down, John!," the opening, in which Congress declares its annoyance with the heat, the flies, and John Adams's insistence on independence; "But, Mr. Adams," in which the members of the Declaration committee insist that each in turn is unsuitable to write the draft, until it settles on Jefferson; "He Plays the Violin," in which Martha Jefferson recalls Thomas's musical talents in wooing her; and "Overture/Lees of Old Virginia," which bookends the musical, and has Richard Henry Lee declare his (hugely confident) intention to get Virginia to bring independence to debate in Congress. Its peppy music will prove a sure earworm.
