Here we see the composer's astonishing imagination to the full, while the dramatic storyline tells of a love-crazed artist who has taken an overdose of opium and dreams that he is being led to the guillotine for murdering his beloved! Berlioz pulls no punches in his bizarre and graphic depiction of the event, yet the music is still full of glorious romantic feeling. As always, Simm's aim has been to capture on two pianos as much of the brilliant orchestral colour in the original as possible.
