Magnificat and Nunc dimittis The 'Schuil' Service 4-Part - Sheet Music

&lsquo,Schuil' means &lsquo, hiding place' in Dutch. Here, it refers to hidden Catholic churches in the Netherlands where clandestine services used to take place. This piece was commissioned jointly between the Koorschool, Delft (for first performance in the Schuilkerk there) and St John's Cathedral, Knoxville, Tennessee. St John wrote many important texts to the early underground Church, and was himself exiled to Patmos for his religious beliefs, which makes this link particularly interesting. As it happens, over the gate to the entrance of the Schuilkerk in Delft (the Begijnhof) there is an early 14th Century carving depicting St John in exile on the island of Patmos.
