Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager chose Cross to sing it “because the year before he’d won five Grammys”. Peter Allen also has a song credit because he had written the line “When you get caught between the moon and New York City” a few years earlier, and Sager asked him to use it.
The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1981, and also topped the Adult Contemporary chart. It also hit #1 in Norway and reached the top 10 in Switzerland and New Zealand. It was certified Gold by the RIAA. “Arthur’s Song” won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.
