“Love is My Sin”
“Love is My Sin” is one of the 154 sonnets published in 1609 as the last non-dramatic work of one of the greatest British playwrights, William Shakespeare. In admiration and respect for the writer and his sonnets, in which he described the battle between love and time (likely throughout his entire life), I composed the 142nd sonnet. As Shakespeare describes the duality between love and hatred towards the so-called “dark lady” in his later sonnets, I divided the mixed choir into a smaller four-part group of singers and the rest of the choir, which intertwine musically and meaningfully. I incorporated influences from Renaissance harmonies and the polyphony of the early Baroque into the music.
