LARGO "FROM THE NEW WORLD" SYMPHONY NO 9 OP 95 by Antonín Dvořák for Brass Band

LARGO "FROM THE NEW WORLD" SYMPHONY NO 9 OP 95 by Antonín Dvořák for Brass BandWithin a year of arriving in New York to be the Director of the National Conservatory of Music of America (1892-1895), Antonín Dvořák composed his ninth symphony, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic (1893).Upon his arrival at the Conservatory, Dvořák was deeply moved by the singing of one of the scholarship students, Harry Burleigh. The traditional spirituals that Burleigh sang resonated with Dvořák's quest to discover 'American Music,' inspiring his compositions. While Burleigh's singing undeniably influenced the Largo, the second movement of the Symphony, the melody is all Dvořák. Dvořák, mindful of Burleigh's baritone voice, decided to change the tune from the Clarinet to the English Horn, giving it a more evocative atmosphere that reflects both his new home and his longing for the one he left behind. This arrangement for British-style Brass Band allows the Flugelhorn to carry the majority of the English Horn lead.It keeps truer to the original; the only portion omitted is the 11 measures quasi-scherzo preceding the final return of the opening theme.Duration 8:15, 52 pages, 116 measuresSound clip generated by Noteperformer.
