Scored for String Quartet with alternative Third Violin part for the Viola and an optional Contrabass part so it can be performed by a String Orchestra.  'La Chevaleresque' has been variously translated as 'a titled lady riding a horse', the 'spirit of chivalry', 'the cavalier' and so on. Nevertheless, the traditional link between chivalry and the gallant knight on horseback is quite evident. In the music itself, which has a consistent underlying pulse, Burgmüller cleverly manipulates the notation to express the various gaits of a horse, starting with an 'elegant but unsteady walk' and culminating in a brilliant semiquaver gallop! It’s great fun to play.
