King Herod's Secret Plan (Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence) - SATB, violin duet (opt) and piano by Gustav Holst 4-Part - Digital Sheet Music
By Gustav HolstThe melody is from the song Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence. I've always thought it a hauntingly beautiful song. It is used at Christmas time, so I thought I'd create new lyrics to reflect King Herod wanting the wisemen to track down the new born King so he could secretly do away with him. After hearing of his plan, the Wisemen warned Joseph to take his family to a safe place. The lyrics are based off the readings of Matthew 2: 1-16. I have written it in SATB format with optional violins (parts included) and also piano. If you don't have violins, but have a keyboard with strings, you can duplicate it in this way since it's in the key of C. Lyrics:
King Herod’s Secret Plan
Verse 1:
Herod heard the news of a new King
and he was deeply concerned
He gathered all his chief priests and teachers
And asked them where this new King was born
Herod sent the wisemen out to find him
In the town of Bethlehem
Verse 2:
Herod said as soon as you find him
Come and report to me
for I want to go and to worship
this newborn baby
Herod had a plan he kept in secrecy
For soon all the world would see
Vere 3:
The wiseman saw a star at it’s rising
o’re a place Jesus lay
There they found Mary and Joseph
And Jesus asleep on the hay
They were overjoyed at this holy sight
And gave him their treasures that day
Verse 4:
While asleep they all had the same dream
That warned them of Herod’s plan
After warning Joseph to leave there,
They took a different route to their lands
Herod hearing this was outraged
He ordered all the young boys to die
Verse 5:
Joseph took his wife and the baby
They fled to Israel
After Herod’s death they returned there
But left fearing Herod’s son
So they traveled on to the town of Nazareth
It became His home for many years.
Ending:
As a carpenter, he soon earned the name of
Jesus, the Nazarene.
