John Thompson was famous for his sincere efforts to interest young pupils in pianism. This series is a clear, correct and complete foundation in the study of the piano to enable the student to think and feel musically. All of his books teach, in the simplest language possible, interpretation and expression. One ideal is "to use in miniature the same attacks as those used by the concert artist.".

Good Book for Learning Classical Piano
I was taught from this series at age 8 and finished it at 14. Although I learned a tremendous amount, and am happy to have learned classical piano, other piano books take a more organic approach to learning explaining things more slowly with each piece. This is a great book, though don't expect to get thru each book in a year. That isn't likely, unless the student is ambitious. I'm glad I was taught classical piano as opposed to something more temporal.

Nearing the end
Grade 4 marks only one more book until mastery of the John Thompson series. Although not being close to true mastery, this book does include some more advanced pieces at a more appropriate level for the repertoire that a concert pianist would probably need. This includes several well known pieces from famous classical figures included & not limited to Beethoven, Chopin & Strauss. I'd recommend it to advanced pianists who have a great taste in music but isn't quite ready for proficient-level pieces.

Awesome Lesson Book! :D
I really like the John Thompson series! This book includes a lot of good intermediate-leveled pieces and I found that the information on the top page of every song is highly interesting.Ever since I started with the 1st Grade Book a year ago, I already knew that this series will entertain me in all musical ways. Lots of favorite pieces in this book. I recommend this book to anyone in the intermediate level of piano (6-8) as some pieces are twice as hard as the level of the book.

Beautiful songs
Great book with wonderful musical selections. My music teacher said these John Thompson books were the best to teach from. I still have the original one I used when I took lessons from 1958 to 1961. The Fourth Grade Book is my favorite because of the number of songs in it that I like. I bought this new copy for a friend who also learned to play the piano using the John Thompson series.
