John Thompson Book 1
This is a great beginner book to learn to read and put hands together. There are some great songs that sound good from the start!

John Thompson
I bought this for a transfer student who had been in another prep method. He was halfway through the method but his teacher was plodding him through even though he was much more advanced. After starting him in this, he is ecstatic! I loaned him an old copy from my studio until his came and he flew through the first 2 pieces. I am using this along with Thompson supplementary method Melody All The Way. I don't use every page of the supplementary book, but if I feel he needs a bit more review of a technique I can always add another piece at the same level with the same technical requirements. Students are also thrilled to get pieces by Real composers in the supplement. Thompson not only expects much of the student, but expects much of us, the teachers. After nearly 40 years of teaching and going through every method out there, I always return to Thompson. Just can't beat it!

John Thompson's First Grade Book
I have been teaching for over 35 years. I have used nearly every method out there, and have gone back to the Thompson method. Yes, some of the other methods have music that may seem more 'Fun but if you want your students to become excellent pianists and not just okay, mediocre piano players, stick with Thompson. If you have young students, start them with Teaching Little Fingers To Play and go to this one. PLEASE skip the Teaching Little Fingers To,Play More book. It it's NOT a Thompson book and it is complex and absolutely NOT a good move from the Primer Thompson to the First Grade Book. If you want fun music for your students, there are plenty of supplemental things you can add. Thompson now has a series of Popular Song books, correlated to each level. There is a big book of songs for Teaching Little Fingers that is great for that level and also as use for fun, or sight reading for this level. Get your students plenty of sheet music!

Masterpiece
This was one of the books I used learning. Some of the pieces got a bit tricky towards the end, but still at an easy level.

A Real Gem
I taught myself how to read music and play piano w/this book when I was 8 years old. I'm 50 now, and I'm glad to see its still available for ppl wanting to learn the instrument. It will help you get a solid foundation as a beginner if you have any innate musical talent. Geared towards children, but adult beginners who aren't too proud can benefit too. What really helped me was to emphasis on 'hand positions' w/photographic examples.

Good to get basics
I bought this to help relearn the basics after not playing for many years. It was a good choice for that purpose.

order mix up
I did not get the book I wanted. I reviewed the return policy and sent it back. I hope my credit card is refunded the amount I paid as I never could speak to a live person, just followed instructions.

still well worth it!
Thompson piano course has been around for many years-I used it as a beginning piano student. It is a method that encourages note reading and pattern reading as well as sight reading.I have tried other method books but find that Thompson books meet more of my students needs. I use supplemental materials as warranted.

Delightfully dated, but encouraging
I picked this book up in a secondhand store, with the intention of teaching myself to play the piano. I already play other instruments and have always harboured a desire to play a keyboard, tackle complex harmony and improve my sight-reading. I found the finger numbers others have mentioned aren't such a problem. You can zone-them-out with a bit of discipline, though I guess children would be tempted to rely on them. It helps being 49 years old - and probably blind as a bat! I found the descriptions interesting and the establishment of the finger patterns helpful. The pieces are understandably antiquated, the illustrations and lyrics delightfully kitsch by today's standards, but it's a charming and methodical tutor.
