Composed by Colin Kirkpatrick. Concert,Holiday,Love,Wedding. Score and part. 19 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #6521807. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522280).
Island of Dreams by Colin Kirkpatrick is a new set of ten really easy cello pieces using open strings and 1st position only. These short pieces are musical sketches of a magical island somewhere in South East Asia. The first three pieces use open strings only and the others make use of 1st, 2nd and 3rd fingers. This collection is for students at absolute beginner level and those at an early elementary stage. It’s intended as supplementary material to your usual teaching materials. There’s plenty of contrasting music for a beginner student recital or an end-of-semester concert. Your cello students are sure to find these pieces enjoyable, and useful for sight-reading with more experiences players. All the pieces can be played in first position. The first three use long notes on open strings, with simple bowing and limited dynamic markings. The remaining pieces use open strings and first, second or third fingers.
Every piece has a short keyboard introduction so that the student can sense the tempo and musical style before playing. The accompaniments have been kept as simple as possible. Dynamic markings are used from the start, and some articulations marks (notably staccato) are used. Several pieces have a few measures rest in the middle to give the player a break and add musical contrast and also to give experience of counting empty bars.
The album consists of piano-cello score and a separate cello solo part contained in a single PDF file. The audio sample contains the following pieces (1) Dance to the rising sun; (2) Song of dawn; (3) Slow waltz at the seashore; (4) At the temple gate; (5) Ancient song to the sea; (9) Dance of the new moon and (10) Dance from the woodlands.
