Holy Holy Holy by John Bacchus Dykes Brass Ensemble - Digital Sheet Music
By John Bacchus DykesJohn Bacchus Dykes was an English clergyman and hymnist who published sermons and articles on religion best known for over 300 hymn tunes he composed. He wrote the tune Nicaea, specifically for this hymn in 1861. Lyrics were written by Reginald Heber for Trinity Sunday while he was a Vicar in Hodnet, Shropshire, England. This hymn is commonly known by the first line of those lyrics: “Holy Holy Holy”.The name is a tribute to the First Council of Nicaea, a council of Christian bishops convened in Bithynia (present day İznik in Turkey) by the Roman Emperor Constantine I in 325 BC. The Council was historically significant as the first effort to attain consensus in the church through an assembly representing all of Christendom. The doctrine of the trinity was first established there. The hymn tune has been quite popular and has shown up in diverse settings such as the 1953 film version of Titanic and even country music albums. This contemporary arrangement of the Nicaea tune, arranged for brass quintet, presents a nice festive hymn tune that is popular and easily recognized by many church audiences for Easter, Christmas, or any other festive occasion.
