Havanaise, Op. 83/ R. 202 by Clinton Nieweg Concert Band - Sheet Music

By Clinton Nieweg

HAVANAISE, Op. 83 / R. 202 was composed in 1887 by Camille Saint-Saëns (1835–1921) for the violinist Rafael Díaz Albertini, though it soon became associated with—and championed by—Pablo de Sarasate, to whom the work is dedicated. Inspired by the habanera, a Cuban dance rhythm that had become fashionable in Europe, Saint-Saëns crafted a virtuosic showpiece that blends sensual rhythmic sway with luminous harmonic color and lyrical elegance. The premiere took place in 1888, performed by Sarasate, who helped establish the work as one of the composer's most successful contributions to the violin repertoire. Today HAVANAISE remains a beloved staple among violinists, frequently performed in both recital and orchestral settings for its perfect union of technical brilliance, expressive warmth, and cosmopolitan charm. This newly engraved edition has been completed by Clinton Nieweg and Nancy Bradburd and includes both the original keys and transposed parts for the Clarinets, Horns, and Trumpets. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): Solo Violin.
