I love this book! When I had a stroke I used my childhood book of Hanon to get my dexterity back in both hands. I lost my original book of Hanon so I ordered another. Thank you!

Hanon Virtuoso Pianist
I agree with Steve; I quite playing piano @ 16 after over 10 years of lessons. Fast forward 40 years - decided I wanted to play for my own enjoyment not recitals. Had to start at the very beginning. These exercises were immensely helpful. Can't daydream while doing them though or you'll get all mixed up.

Hanon - The Virtuoso Pianist
This has been a solid technique building method for probably 100 yrs. I grew up on it (now 85), & still use it for warm-ups. It is excellent for developing evenness & strength of all 10 fingers. I can't praise it enough!

More on how to transpose
The review about transposing is spot on, doing the first set of exercises in C (all white notes), is just repeating a specfic pattern over and over. A great explanation of where to expand to other keys is in Playing the Piano for Pleasure, by Charles Cooke.

Hanon Virtuoso Pianist in 60 exercises
Every student should warm-up their hands before practicing, like a runner would do stretches before running. This book of exercises provides finger/hand stretches.

Popular and Inefficient
Hanon was an organist!!The hand position for a pianist is not the same. Use with care.

A definite must for all pianists!
These exercises are excellent to warm up your fingers. I had started working with them a while back, then left them, and now I realize that they were very helpful in warming up my fingers before playing scales, chords and arpeggios. Recently, I've come back to them and have truly seen and felt a difference in my playing. A definite must for all pianists interested in advancing their technique.

Hanon Exercises/Bock Book
Thank you for sending both the Hanon Book and the Bock Book. I am sorry for not writing sooner. You were so kind to send both to me. I have had a mishap and will not have use of them but couldn't return them because I had thrown away the invoice. For sure, if i could have kept on in music, I would have ordered more down the road from you. Thanks again. Marge H.

Excellent exercises
There seems to be some debate about the usefulness of Hanon. I think that most of the criticisms fall short because they usually assume a particular approach or practice method and this seems to be the problem, not the exercises themselves. If used correctly these exercises can be very useful to help build strength in lacking areas and of course they encourage evenness between the hands which is always good. I would recommend this to any pianist who wishes to conquer their technical challenges

Beginner and advanced!
As an advanced pianiast, you can just dive right in. I love this and can vouch for them to be excellent, none better!. I have been noticing that there are some who rate the Hanon as Advanced, and others say beginner. As an advanced pianist I use them as written. For late beginner and above students, there is a highly readable version in eighth notes, going up and down one octave instead of two. (Bastien, last I heard). Also, try playing around with different rhythm patterns instead of straight sixteenths all the time. It changes which fingers get the workout.

great book for all
As a Intermidiate/Advanced player who has been playing for 11 years, I fully recommend this book to students and professionals alike. You don't have to follow the exact method perscribed in the book, but it can be beneficial. Your technical ability with really start to improve by the 10th exercice! You should be beyond the five-finger stage before you start it though.

Excellent
My mom made me take piano growing up, of course I was unhappy. I quit when I was 18. Fast-forward nearly 10 years and here I am happier than ever that I learned. I was home visiting one day and I found this book and took it back to my own home and started going through it. I must say it has helped me immensely! I've been playing everyday now for the last few years and with the help of this book I'm back on top of my piano playing.....and loving it this time around. GET THIS BOOK!!!!!

Well, after a number of years away from the piano, I needed to get my fingers back in good balanced shape. Note I said balanced shape. this means all digits working at peak efficiency and ability. That means calesthenics for the hands. Here you go. This volume is designed to help you get balanced and co ordinated co operation from your fingers. Whether just starting or, as with me, coming back... or even if you just aren't happy with your development, this volume is what you need. Trust me. I'm a music teacher, too, and having been classically trained in my youth, I never forgot my lessons about being in proper shape to play those challenging passages!
