Students who grew up in the church likely know these hymns by heart. These duets are designed to put as much of the melody as possible in the part of the student, while also limiting the required range. Where the range is too large, the teacher part takes over. This provides a good opportunity to practice ensemble and chamber music playing skills. The parts are clearly marked on each phrase as to which part is the melody; the melody is always marked with a forte, and the secondary part is marked piano. The limited range provided in this book is designed to align with the method books that many band programs begin with, so that middle school students can jump in as soon as possible.
