From the Barest of Unformed Kernels... Concert Band - Digital Sheet Music

This piece began when a conductor friend of mine commissioned me to write a work celebrating the birth of his son. At the time of this request, I was also interested in exploring some unique textures for wind band – in particular a soundmass texture, as I felt that that ensemble would be well suited to achieve such an end. When I considered the commission prompt with this desire in mind, I decided that an interesting take would be to use a soundmass texture as an analogy for the gestational process. What follows can be described as a sort of “inner view” of a pregnancy, starting from the moment of conception and progressing through birth, and slightly beyond. Notes, motifs, etc. can in some ways be viewed as “cells” – which divide, multiply, specialize, and form new arrangements as the piece progresses. At the end of the piece simple, proto- melodies at last begin to emerge, which I interpret as symbolizing the beginning of self-actualization.
