The libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave after Don Álvaro, o La fuerza del sino, by Ángel de Saavedra. Following many performances around the world that included some minor revisions, Verdi made extensive revisions in 1869. That revised version, which premiered at La Scala in Milan on February 27, 1869, is frequently performed today. In the Act II, Scene 10 (No. 7) finale, Leonora arrives at a monastery, desiring a life of atonement for her past. She prepares to retire into a cave for a trial of solitude as the abbot and the monks lift their voices in prayer (Il santo nome di Dio; La Vergine degli angeli).
